Beer

First and foremost, the Red Lion is about cask conditioned ales.

We are a traditional village pub serving local and seasonal, cask conditioned ales with the skill, care and dedication required to ensure the customer experiences the perfect pint time and again.

At any time, we offer 4 regular and 4 guest ales.

As an avid supporter of local breweries, our regulars include the ever popular Charnwood Vixen and the flagship that is Marstons Pedigree. Guest and seasonal variations include favourites such as Woodfordes Wherry and Timothy Taylor Landlord.

Morning Daryl, Good to see you last night and well done on what I describe as a sympathetic refurbishment. It’s so difficult to change things but not change them! It was all positive from the locals I talked to, a great start. With my Brewers’s hat on I was immensely proud of the quality of the Salvation and Vixen so please pass on a pat on the back to the cellar team.

Andrew Reed

Founder, Charnwood Brewery

When it comes to cask ale, we leave nothing to chance.

Our temperature controlled cellars and stringent cellar management processes mean we deliver top quality ale, in its very best condition. We even ensure that it is served in the very glass, it was designed to be consumed in – time and again. It’s our passion.

We also stock a fine range of premium, continental lagers.

On draft you can select from Amstel, San Miguel or Estrella Damm backed up by a wide variety of bottled lagers from around the world. All our continental lagers are served to perfection in branded glassware.

We also have regular craft beer with Shipyard American IPA and Revisionist Craft Lager. We also offer a guest craft ale alongside these regulars.

Refreshing Apple Ciders and Perrys

On draft you can choose either Thatchers Gold or Stowford Press plus we have a wide variety of fruit and berry variations on bottle.

A drop or two of the Black Stuff and everyday is St Patrick’s.

Finally but definitely not least we stock Guinness Draught. We serve in the traditional way, in a Guinness glass. The first pour at an angle of 45º to 3/4 full. Rest and wait for the surge to settle. Start the final pour to the top and serve. It’s also vegan friendly.

Beyond Draft we believe in Craft

Craft IPAs, ryes, stouts, porters, wheats, gluten-free, American, Belgium, Indian or even Scottish are available by the bottle. Our range changes on a seasonal basis so it’s quite different in winter as compared to the heights of summer. Hopefully you will be spoilt for choice.

Our beer, our cellar, our staff.

When we moved in, we decommissioned and disposed of the existing cellar equipment and installed brand new. The works were carried out by brewery specialists and all of our staff are trained to maintain the exact standards set.

Welcome to our Regulars and Guest (Beers) alike…

Regulars

Charnwood Vixen abv 4%

A well-balanced copper-coloured best bitter with subtle hints of honey, spice and hedgerow fruits. Late added Pacific Gem hops deliver a fruity nose and finish. A craft beer from just down the road in Loughborough it has soon become a favourite with both regulars and guests.

Charnwood Salvation abv 3.8%

Also part of the local Charnwood stable, a light refreshing golden beer, with tropical fruit, citrus, and floral flavours. American Cascade and Amarillo hops create a citrus aroma, and crisp clean bitterness on the finish.

Marstons Pedigree abv 4.5%

Introduced in 1952 Pedigree soon became Marstons flagship ale. It is the only beer to use the oak Burton Union System so that it is fermented in wood; the ingredients are mineral enriched Burton Water, malted barley, and Fuggles and Goldings hops. Many say it’s hard to keep but at its best is unbeatable.

Courage Directors abv 4.8%

Originally brewed at Alton Brewery in Hampshire in 1903 for the Courage directors; spare beer was sold as Alton IPA, which acquired the nickname of Director’s Bitter. This premium cask ale has a strong following throughout the country. Pale brown and full bodied with a clean, bitter taste, balanced with a sweet burnt, malty and fruity notes with a distinctive dry-hop aroma and flavour.

Guests

At the Red Lion we always have space for at least 4 guest ales. We aim to keep these seasonal with a mixture of countrywide brands, local artisan brewers and specialist porters. These are not limited to cask ales and we also stock guest craft ales alongside our regular range.

We like to offer a wide choice to all our customers who can take a pint or two of their favourite tipple or explore a newcomer, as per their fancy.

All our ales have individual Kilner jars to detail the colour of the ale and we have a description of our current guest ales on blackboard tiles.

Please ask if you have any questions or would like to try a taster before you buy. We are passionate about beer and want our customers to share and enjoy our ale at its best.
